By Jack Kornfield is a great book to start your meditation journey. It is full of personal experiences, practical exercises, the philosophy and the purpose of meditation techniques for everyday life.

Each chapter is dedicated to a specific practice. I recommend taking as much time as necessary to fully digest each section and practice provided meditations for, at least, a week before moving on to the next one. I have been working my way trough this book for 2 years now. It is a great way of experiencing a wide range of meditation techniques, so you have a basis for building your own practice.
